AR Management FAQs

What does AR mean in medical billing?

AR (accounts receivable) is money owed to your practice for care you have already provided, by insurance plans and by patients. AR management means tracking every open claim and balance and following up until it is paid, adjusted or appealed.

What is a good number of days in AR?

Many practices aim for fewer than 40 days in AR, with less than 15 to 20 percent of their AR older than 90 days. Higher numbers usually mean claims are not being followed up fast enough.

How do you calculate days in AR?

Divide your total accounts receivable by your average daily charges. For example, $150,000 in AR divided by $5,000 in average daily charges equals 30 days in AR. Use the same period (such as the last 3 or 6 months) every time so the trend is meaningful.

Can old unpaid claims still be collected?

Often, yes. Claims that are still inside the payer’s filing and appeal limits can be corrected, resubmitted or appealed. We sort old AR by payer and age, work the claims most likely to pay first, and tell you which balances can no longer be recovered.
